Edmonton Tennis Community (ETC) is proud to once again partner with Tennis Canada, Tennis Alberta, and coaches Peter, Conor, and Jasmine to deliver a free tennis school program to students at Monsignor William Irwin Catholic School.
This exciting initiative provided four tennis classes for Grade 5 and Grade 6 students, introducing them to the fundamentals of tennis through games, structured activities, and skill-based drills in a dynamic, engaging, and encouraging environment. Each lesson welcomed 30 students, a great ratio to coaches that ensured every child received individual attention and support on the court.
The impact of the program was immediately felt by students and educators alike. One Grade 5 teacher shared:
"A big thanks to the two coaches from Edmonton Tennis Community who recently came to provide 2 free tennis lessons to my grade 5 classroom at MWI. They were wonderful with the kids, knowledgeable, and created real interest introducing a fun and engaging sport. Experiences like this really have a large impact on kids and the fact that it was at no cost to the students was very appreciated. I’d love to have had another week with them to help teach more skills and encourage more students to get involved in the sport beyond school. Thank you again!"
To make the program fully accessible, ETC supplies all necessary equipment, including tennis balls, nets, and racquets. By bringing the equipment directly into the school setting, students are able to focus on learning and enjoying the sport without any barriers to participation.
“This program is all about creating opportunities,” said Shaylea Mohr, Program Coordinator at ETC. “By working alongside our partners and dedicated coaches, we’re able to introduce students to tennis in a way that is inclusive, fun, and completely free. Seeing students try something new, gain confidence, and enjoy being active is what makes this program so meaningful.”
This marks the third school ETC has been able to support through this free tennis school program between the months of October and December 2025, highlighting our continued commitment to youth sport development and community engagement. Each school visit builds momentum toward ETC’s broader goal of increasing access to tennis and creating positive first experiences for young athletes.
With the continued support of its partners, ETC hopes to expand the program to more schools in 2026, reaching even more students and communities. By removing financial and equipment barriers, ETC aims to inspire a lifelong love of physical activity and sport.
ETC is proud to support initiatives that strengthen communities, promote healthy lifestyles, and help young athletes discover new passions—one rally at a time!
