The Garneau Tennis and Beach Volleyball Club opened its 2026 summer season with a lively Open House on May 9th, welcoming new and returning members for an afternoon of sport, community, and sunshine. Held on a warm Saturday afternoon, the event brought Edmontonians of all ages out to tour the club, meet the vendors, connect with the community, and try their hand at tennis and beach volleyball.
Club President Jonathan Pearson kicked things off with an opening speech, sharing his excitement for the season ahead and announcing that the club's tennis courts are set for renovations at the end of August. From there, attendees were invited to join a full slate of drop-in activities led by experienced instructors. Whether someone was picking up a racquet for the first time or looking to sharpen skills they already had, there was something for everyone.

On the tennis courts, instructors walked newcomers through basic strokes, footwork, and rallying, offering tips and encouragement along the way. The beach volleyball area was just as busy, with groups rotating through games and plenty of guests giving the sport a try for the first time.
The event also featured a vendor area, where Kevin Martins Sports and Wilson set up with tennis gear and demo racquets that guests could take onto the court to try out. Edmonton Tennis Community (ETC) was there promoting TENNISfest 2026 (our 5th year!), our upcoming adult mixed tournament, and our junior summer camps. Guests could stop by to ask questions about programs and learn what is coming up this season. Garneau also put on a BBQ throughout the afternoon, with refreshments available for players, vendors, and volunteers.

ETC coach, volunteer, and long-time member Thuy Cao reflected on the day's success:
"It was a privilege to help out the Garneau Tennis Club to teach the children how to play tennis. For some it was the first time holding a racquet while others had already taken tennis lessons through ETC. I had so much fun! From the self rally to fun games the children were so excited to learn more. With the new clay courts coming up next year, I think Garneau will be the center of summer training courts for juniors all over Alberta and near by area. I am looking more and more forward to seeing more children in tennis."
By the end of the day, more than 200 visitors had come through, with many signing up for summer programs and memberships on the spot. Guests left with smiles, new friends, and plenty of information on how to stay involved with the club and its vendors.
The Garneau Tennis and Beach Volleyball Club's Open House was more than just a season opener. It was a celebration of outdoor activity, community spirit, and the start of another great summer of sport. With lessons, tournaments, and events lined up in the coming months, Garneau and ETC are ready to welcome both familiar faces and new ones to the courts!
