ETC Youth Winter Tournament – A Milestone Event

On Sunday, February 1st, Edmonton Tennis Community (ETC) proudly hosted its very first Recreational Youth Winter Tournament, welcoming 30 young athletes between the ages of 10 and 17. This event marked an exciting milestone for ETC as we continue expanding opportunities for youth players in our community to experience friendly competition in a supportive environment.

The tournament brought together athletes of varying experience levels, creating an atmosphere filled with encouragement, sportsmanship, and excitement. Throughout the day, players demonstrated impressive focus, resilience, and enthusiasm as they competed in both main draw and consolation matches. From long rallies to tie-break thrillers, every match showcased the dedication these young athletes have put into developing their game.

For many participants, this tournament was their first chance to compete in a recreational tournament setting. Stepping onto the court in a competitive format helped players build confidence and learn match-play strategy on the spot. Seeing players apply the skills they’ve been developing and challenge themselves on the court was incredibly rewarding for our coaches, families, and volunteers alike. The energy in the facility was electric, with families cheering from the sidelines and players supporting one another between matches.

Beyond the competition itself, the event emphasized community connection. Athletes had the opportunity to meet peers from different programs, build friendships, and experience the camaraderie that makes tennis such a lifelong sport. Events like this play an important role in fostering not only athletic development but also character, perseverance, and respect for opponents.

A special thank you goes out to our volunteer referees and our Tournament Director, Sonny, who has coached many of these athletes through our Youth Train & Play program. It was inspiring to see players he has worked with grow and compete at this level.

A huge thanks to Tennis Alberta for their support in supplying all of the tennis balls used throughout the tournament. Their contribution played an important role in ensuring high-quality match play for every athlete and helped make the event a seamless and professional experience.

We were also grateful to provide snacks and water for all participants and spectators, thanks to the generous support of Save-On-Foods (10368 78 Ave NW). Their contribution helped create a welcoming and comfortable experience for everyone in attendance.
